“Without technology, the games is just people running around a field!”. Ok, so there may be a little bit more to it, but from whichever functional area or games department you are from, it is easy to have the perception that without “me” there would be no games at all.
Although to be honest there is one group that exists that truly can make this claim, the athletes. Without them there is definitely no sport competition. And when you consider how much dedication, blood, sweat and tears go into being selected for an Olympic team, it truly is inspiring.
It wasn’t until I started exercising and competing in the occasional 5k and 10k race that I started to fully appreciate the effort athletes need to put in to achieve a spot on an Olympic team. My level of dedication was slightly different, I would still take my bus pass with me when I went on a training run, just in case I couldn’t make it back!
Happy 11 days to go! And don’t forget, somewhere in the world an athlete is waking up to go training!
