“What’s left to do and do you have enough time?” I am asked this everyday.
At this stage of the project with the opening ceremony just 29 days away, it can often feel a little over whelming with everything that still needs to be done. However can we really be that concerned at this stage? From when the games were awarded to Rio over seven years ago, the Olympic delivery team has been slowly assembling to ensure this event happens. I made the comment today about it being like “Avengers Assemble”, just thank goodness my team doesn’t wear lycra! Although the combined colours of our games uniforms may make us look like we are dressed as superheroes sometimes.
But seriously, in the last few days I have constantly welcomed old friends as they arrive from around the world to join this amazing team in these final days of this epic delivery. There is a buzz in the air, an excitement, a feeling of partial anticipation and perhaps a little apprehension. However, I doubt at all if any of us would be here if we honestly thought there was even the remotest chance of failure.
And yes, I am a “half glass full” kinda guy, but I don’t feel like I am alone, especially when I observe the sense of camaraderie and spirit that the Olympics envibes in its delivery team, and even more so during these final days of preparations.
Happy 29 days to go! And here’s to welcoming old friends to a new Olympic city!
