The Facebook vs LinkedIn debate…

Where to post…Facebook or LinkedIn?

Ok, I am back! However the challenge I faced with this post was not the content, but where I should post it?!? Given all the articles and “very strong opinions” about LinkedIn not being Facebook, I deliberated considerably as to where this post should be…but in the end I decided to post on both and see what people say…so I look forward to your comments…I think! 🙂

Well, life for me and my wife has certainly changed in the past two months with the arrival of our beautiful daughter Isabella. And what a gorgeous “little bundle of love” she is. Whilst there was a 21year gap between kiddies for me, my wonderful son arrived back in 1995, it is amazing how quick we adapt back into sleepless nights and the constant reminder that we are no longer alone.

But it has raised a lot of questions for me around the work life balance we all strive for. I made the deal with my wife that for the final few weeks of the pregancy and the first couple of months I would not work…much. (Hence also why no blogging recently.) And I have to admit that I am so happy that; 1. I had the flexibility to take the time out to be at home and 2. I did actually take the time out as agreed.

Why? I guess because much of my life/career has been committed to the project or event ahead of me. Focusing on an Olympic delivery can be all consuming and from experience it is not something that I have found easy to step away from for an extended period of time. Even taking holidays would still involve the email ambilical connection courtesy of my “always on” iPhone.

That said, I seriously think I have been getting it wrong. What the last couple of months has taught me is that it is possible to do both. And more importantly it is essential that I find better ways to manage the balance. And I know it is a cliche, but for me now I get it more than ever, that no one is going to say on their deathbed, “gee, I really do wish I spent more time answering email, instead of cuddling my daughter on the sofa for half an hour!”.

So what’s next for me?  Well I’ll save that for next blog, as for now I have to go pick up Isabella and give her a cuddle and see if I can make her give me one of those adorable little smiles.  And for you, I would just recommend that you check in with your “work life balance-o-meter” to ensure your email inbox is not robbing you of that cuddle or that thing you wish you did a little bit more of.
